HPE DL360 versus DL380 Gen10: Which Refurbished Server?
Compare the DL360 and DL380 Gen10 by rack height, drive configuration, expansion layout and the cost of a complete refurbished build.
The HPE ProLiant DL360 Gen10 and DL380 Gen10 answer different rack-planning questions. The DL360 Gen10 occupies 1U; the DL380 Gen10 occupies 2U. Both are Intel Xeon Scalable platforms with DDR4 memory, but their chassis, drive arrangements and expansion options differ. For a refurbished purchase, choose the configuration that meets your requirement today and leaves a practical upgrade route.
This comparison covers the original Gen10 models. Gen10 Plus and other generations require separate checks. Manufacturer platform capabilities describe possible configurations; they do not establish which processors, memory, drives or accessories are included in a particular listing.
DL360 versus DL380 Gen10: the useful differences
| Buying question | DL360 Gen10 | DL380 Gen10 |
|---|---|---|
| Rack height | 1U | 2U |
| Processor platform | Intel Xeon Scalable; exact processor support depends on the model | Intel Xeon Scalable; exact processor support depends on the model |
| Memory platform | DDR4 RDIMM or LRDIMM; 24 DIMM slots across two processors | DDR4 RDIMM or LRDIMM; 24 DIMM slots across two processors |
| Chassis choices | SFF, dedicated NVMe and LFF variants | SFF and LFF variants with configuration-dependent additional drive options |
| Expansion planning | Check primary and secondary riser options | Check primary, secondary and tertiary riser options |
| Management platform | HPE iLO 5; verify the installed licence | HPE iLO 5; verify the installed licence |
| Main decision | Does the required build fit the available drive bays and card positions? | Does the additional rack space provide useful storage or expansion flexibility? |
When the DL360 Gen10 makes sense
Consider the DL360 when rack height is a firm constraint and the planned hardware fits its particular chassis. Start with the storage requirement, networking and any extra controller. Then confirm that the relevant card fits the installed riser and that the chosen drive interface is supported. A compact chassis is useful only if it accommodates the complete build.
Do not choose it solely because an existing server also occupies 1U. Check rail compatibility, rack depth, cable access and power connections. Review DL360 Gen10 server listings and use the DL360 Gen10 parts and upgrades hub when planning replacements.
When the DL380 Gen10 makes sense
Consider the DL380 when the required drive arrangement or expansion layout justifies a 2U system. Write down the number of drives needed now, the future requirement and the cards that must run alongside them. This gives you a reason to pay for a particular chassis rather than buying spare space without a plan.
Check how drive cages and risers share the available space. HPE documents configuration restrictions, so a storage addition can affect expansion choices. Browse DL380 Gen10 server listings and the DL380 Gen10 parts and upgrades hub to start a specification enquiry.
Compare the completed build cost
Use the same requirements for both quotations: processor models and count, installed RAM, usable storage plan, controller, network ports, power supplies, rails and warranty. Add the parts missing from each listing before comparing totals. A lower chassis price can lose its advantage once the required components and accessories are included.
For memory, confirm the existing DIMM type, part numbers and population before adding modules. For processors, confirm the exact supported configuration. HPE's QuickSpecs state that field upgrades from first-generation to second-generation Xeon Scalable processors are not supported on these platforms. Do not base a purchase on an assumed processor-generation conversion.
CTO and wholesale buying checks
A CTO chassis and a configured server can carry the same model name while including very different hardware. Request a written component list, including blanks, caddies, controller accessories and management licences. Our CTO versus configured server guide explains how to compare the two.
For a batch, specify whether all units must have matching chassis, CPUs, DIMMs, controllers and network adapters. Check the available quantity of that exact build and the arrangements for future replacements. Use the wholesale procurement checklist when preparing an enquiry through our wholesale refurbished servers page.
Choose from the actual specification
Choose the DL360 if the full specification fits its 1U layout. Choose the DL380 if a verified storage or expansion requirement makes 2U worthwhile. Browse refurbished servers, confirm current stock and check the precise listing before ordering. KahnServers hardware includes a 90-day RTB warranty and free UK delivery; optional longer server warranties are available to purchase.
