CTO vs Configured Refurbished Servers: What Is Included?
Compare CTO platforms and configured refurbished servers by included hardware, management licences, compatibility and total deployment cost.
Two refurbished servers with the same model name can be very different purchases. One may be a chassis prepared for configure-to-order work; another may already contain the processors, memory and drives you need. Compare what is supplied before comparing the price.
This guide explains the checks to make when browsing refurbished servers in the UK. The individual product listing and confirmed quotation determine the hardware included with your order.
What is a CTO server?
CTO means configure to order. In a refurbished catalogue, the term can describe a platform intended to be completed with selected components. It does not provide a universal list of included parts. A CTO listing might name a controller, power supplies, fans or a drive-bay layout while leaving other hardware to be selected separately.
Check whether processors, memory, drives, heatsinks, caddies, rails and network adapters are fitted. Confirm the backplane and controller as well as the number and size of the bays. A chassis with space for drives does not establish that the drives or every carrier are included.
What is a configured refurbished server?
A configured server is supplied with a stated combination of hardware. Read that combination as an itemised specification: processor model and quantity, memory layout, storage, controller, networking and power supplies. “Configured” alone does not mean that an operating system is installed, that application licences are included or that the system is ready for your particular workload.
Ask for any unstated requirement to be confirmed before ordering. A server suitable for one virtualisation or storage design may need a different controller, network adapter or drive layout for another.
CTO base and configured server: what to compare
| Question | CTO platform | Configured system |
|---|---|---|
| What hardware is included? | Use the exact listing; components may need to be selected | Use the stated build specification; confirm omissions |
| Can I choose components? | Selection depends on platform compatibility and available stock | Ask which changes can be quoted for the supplied build |
| Is software included? | Confirm separately | Confirm separately, including licence entitlement |
| How should I compare cost? | Add all hardware required to reach your specification | Compare the same hardware, accessories and warranty period |
| What should a bulk order specify? | The required finished build for each unit | The supplied configuration and any permitted differences between units |
Read management-licence descriptions carefully
Dell iDRAC and HPE iLO provide platform-management capabilities, with feature availability depending on generation and licensing. A title mentioning an Enterprise, Basic or Datacenter licence should be checked against the full product description. Establish whether the listing is a complete platform, a hardware configuration or a licence item, and confirm the entitlement supplied.
Do not assume a management licence is an operating-system licence. If remote console or virtual-media access is required, include the exact management features in your enquiry rather than relying on a broad licence label.
Check compatibility as a complete build
Confirm processor support, memory technology and population rules against the exact server model and revision. For storage, check the drive interface, carriers, backplane, controller and cabling together. Expansion cards also need the appropriate slots, risers, brackets and cooling.
A component that appears in a manufacturer's model family is not automatically compatible with every generation or chassis configuration. Consult the manufacturer's documentation for the exact system, and ask KahnServers about an uncertain requirement before purchasing.
Start with our Dell PowerEdge and HPE ProLiant categories, or use the server configurator to explore the available build options. Keep a record of the exact specification you intend to order.
Budget for the whole deployment
Include all required hardware, installation accessories, software and warranty choices. A lower-priced CTO base can require additional expenditure to reach the same configuration as another listing. Conversely, an existing configured system may contain components you do not need. Compare the final specification that fits your workload.
KahnServers hardware includes a 90-day return-to-base warranty and free UK delivery. Optional paid server upgrades provide 12, 24 or 36 months total warranty cover. Read our warranty and purchasing guidance and confirm the chosen term for the proposed build.
Buying several matching refurbished servers
For a multi-server deployment or resale order, specify which hardware must match across the batch. Include the server model, generation, controller, memory layout and network ports as well as overall capacity. Ask for any substitutions to be stated in the quote.
Use the wholesale server procurement checklist to prepare an enquiry, then request a quote for refurbished servers wholesale. If you are completing systems already owned, send the required part numbers and quantities through our wholesale components page.
