Dell R630 versus R640: Choosing a Refurbished Server

Compare the Dell R630 and R640 by processor platform, included components, storage configuration and the cost of a complete refurbished build.

Comparing a refurbished Dell PowerEdge R630 with an R640 starts with the processor platform and the hardware included in the offer. Both are rack servers, but the R630 supports Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 or v4 processors while the R640 uses Intel Xeon Scalable processors. Their processors and complete configurations are not interchangeable.

Choose between them using a written requirement for compute, memory, storage and networking. The most useful comparison is between two builds that can meet that requirement, including the components needed to complete each system.

R630 versus R640: what to compare

Rack format Check chassis dimensions and rail requirements 1U rack server; check depth and rail requirements
Processor family Intel Xeon E5-2600 v3 or v4; confirm the exact supported build Intel Xeon Scalable family; check supported generation
Memory 24 DIMM slots; check the installed memory specification DDR4 server memory; verify DIMM type and population
Storage Check the exact drive layout, backplane and controller 2.5-inch and 3.5-inch chassis variants; NVMe support is configuration-dependent

When an R630 is worth considering

Consider an R630 when a checked configuration meets the project requirements or when you need a matching replacement for an existing R630 estate. Keeping the same verified specification can simplify your spares list and deployment checklist. That is a practical procurement reason to compare this model; it is not evidence that every R630 will suit the workload.

Start with the installed processor models, memory layout and controller. Then check the drives, networking and accessories that must be added. Browse Dell PowerEdge R630 server listings and use the R630 parts and upgrades hub to organise a replacement-parts enquiry.

When an R640 is worth considering

Consider an R640 when the project calls for a supported Xeon Scalable configuration and you have identified a suitable chassis. Specify the actual CPU model, installed memory and drive interface rather than relying on the model name. The R640's available options do not establish the specification of a refurbished unit.

Pay particular attention to storage. Dell documents different chassis layouts and configuration-dependent NVMe options. A visible drive bay is not proof that an NVMe SSD can be installed there. Confirm the backplane, cabling and controller arrangement before committing to an expansion plan.

For wider buying context, read our Dell Gen13 versus Gen14 guide and R640 server review alongside the exact product specification.

Build a fair cost comparison

Use one bill of materials for both quotations. Record the required processors, RAM, storage, controller, network adapters, power supplies and rails. Add the cost of completing each offer, then compare the finished specification. Include management licences and any software licences required for your deployment, with their terms checked separately.

Do not assume that an R630 processor will transfer to an R640. When considering reuse of memory, confirm the exact DIMM part numbers, type, rank and supported population against the destination system's documentation. A module's capacity alone does not establish compatibility. Ask for the installed component list before planning any reuse.

Check CTO listings and batch consistency

A CTO listing can provide a starting chassis without the processors, RAM or storage required for a complete build. A configured listing still needs an exact specification check. Use our CTO versus configured server guide to record what each offer includes, what must be added and which accessories need confirming.

For wholesale purchases, specify whether all units must match. Record the chassis layout, CPU models, DIMM arrangement, controller, network ports and management licence. Ask for the quantity available in that specification and how substitutions would be handled. Our wholesale server procurement checklist provides a useful order brief for the UK wholesale refurbished servers enquiry.

Choose the build that meets the requirement

An R630 is a candidate when its verified build fulfils the requirement, including replacement consistency. An R640 is a candidate when the specified Xeon Scalable build and storage arrangement fulfil it. Compare current refurbished server listings, confirm available stock and review the included components. KahnServers hardware includes a 90-day RTB warranty and free UK delivery; optional longer server warranties are available to purchase.
