Buying guide: Storage Controllers
Compare RAID controllers and host bus adapters for server storage upgrades. Narrow the selection by controller type, interface, ports, cache and compatible system.
Check whether your chassis requires a PCIe, mini or embedded controller, together with the correct backplane cables and cache protection. Controller and drive protocol support must match.
Hardware supplied by KahnServers includes a 90-day warranty. Check current availability and the individual product specification before ordering.
Distinguish an array replacement from a new build
For an existing array, record the current controller, firmware, drive interface and storage configuration before choosing a replacement. Confirm the manufacturer's supported migration or recovery procedure; a controller with similar ports is not automatically able to use an existing array. Keep backups and a recovery plan separate from the hardware purchase.
For a new configuration, decide whether the system needs hardware RAID or a host bus adapter and check the features supported by the chosen platform. Our guide to RAID controller types helps structure that comparison. Verify the supplied bracket, cables, cache module and cache-protection hardware where the design needs them.
Match the controller to the full storage path
Use the RAID controller replacement guide to prepare a part-number enquiry. Compare the intended server drives with controller and backplane support, including interface and sector format. An advertised port count or cache capacity alone does not establish complete chassis compatibility.
