Choose the port type before the headline speed

Check whether the installation uses copper Ethernet, an optical module or a direct-attach cable, then match the required link rate at both ends. Confirm the exact adapter form factor and host support. The number of ports is a separate choice from link speed and should reflect the connections your deployment actually needs.

For an upgrade, compare 10Gb Ethernet network cards where the server and switch support the intended connection. Check drivers, firmware and any required software features for the part number. A quoted link rate does not promise a particular application throughput.

Include brackets and link components in the specification

Use the wider server NIC collection to compare mounting arrangements. Where modules are needed, check transceivers and optics against both port specifications. State the supplied bracket, cable or module requirement explicitly rather than assuming accessories accompany the adapter.
